Dead March from G. F. Händel’s Oratorio Saul

The “dead march" played in the third act of Händel’s oratorio entitled "Saul", King of Israel in the Old Testament, introducing the funeral rites for the deaths of Saul and Jonathan, is in the key of C major. It includes an organ part and trombones alternating with flutes, oboes and tympani. The “dead march" in Saul has been played at state funerals in the UK, including that of Winston Churchill. It is the standard funeral march of the armed forces of Germany, played at all state funerals. It was also played at George Washington’s funeral, as well as being played many times during the transportation of Abraham Lincoln’s body after his assassination in Springfield, Illinois.
